Leitmotif of the opening exhibition is Alberto Giacometti’s sculpture «L’homme qui marche».The work by this outstanding artist from Graubünden is the starting point for a special preoccupation with the topic “Walking”. It ranges from the physiological aspects of movement, via the measuring of space, to the related shift in perception. Walking is here understood not only as advancement in an outward direction but likewise as inner motion and emotion, which ultimately allows human beings to step outside of themselves. SOLO WALKS conveys walking as an individual experience and shows insight into the inner worlds of resolute walkers.
The exhibition is curated by Stephan Kunz, Juri Steiner and Stefan Zweifel. On a tour responding to the architecture the new museum shows the works of 40 international artists. In this way the exhibition charts a trail through different rooms, which can be read as a grand narrative about walking. In addition to works of the 20th century, works from art and art history are placed specifically to emphasize the special aspects of the topic, among them also manuscripts by Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Robert Walser.
