Olaf Holzapfel (*1967, D) grows up in the GDR and as refugee comes to the Federal Republic via Austria and Hungary in the spring of 1989. After extensive travels and a period of study in Dresden he finally settles in Berlin. Boundaries and transitions also generate the motifs of his images and installations. Holzapfel considers the living spaces of today as flowing. The installation Pflanzenwerk (2021), which he is creating at the Art Museum Graubünden, comes across as permeable, light and figurative despite its monumentality. For his first institutional exhibition in Switzerland he is building a timber structure with wooden beams, which forms the framework for a curved wall made from thousands of reed stalks. As a result the smell and feel of the wickerwork as well as the frame structure reflect that sweet grass and wood are essential materials of nature. For generations they have shaped our architecture and landscape. In the recollection of rural traditions he highlights their relevance and shows how renewable raw materials are ecologically in the focus of social change.
