The Foundation Bündner Art Collection owns and is the responsible organization for the art collection of the Art Museum Graubünden. It was established in 1929 by the Canton of Graubünden, The Art Association Graubünden, and the city of Chur with the target of caring for, preserving, and imparting knowledge about the collection of the Art Museum Graubünden. The Foundation Bündner Art Collection funds new acquisitions, loans, and publications. In 1979 the foundation’s contractual agreement was amended and the board of trustees restructured to henceforth comprise three representatives from the Art Association and the Canton of Graubünden respectively as well as one from the city of Chur.
The mission of the foundation is "to organize the holdings of Bündner art collection in order to preserve art for posterity and to foster art trends in the region. Additionally it must maintain the Bündner Kunstmuseum as the permanent home for the art collection and as a venue for presentations of art and artists relevant to Graubünden.”
For new acquisitions the Foundation Bündner Art Collection receives funding from the Canton of Graubünden. The budget for purchases is supplemented through private sponsoring and institutional support. Additionally the foundation is allowed to regularly accept generous donations and bequests for the collection.
