The internationally famous family of artists from Val Bregaglia – with Giovanni Giacometti and his sons Alberto and Diego as well as their distant relation Augusto – is prominently present in the Collection of the Art Museum Graubünden through extensive bodies of their artworks.
In the historical Villa Planta a selection of choice works of the members of this family is on show and the location can thus be explored as a “Giacometti House”. The exhibition focuses on Giovanni Giacometti’s “colour-in-light paintings” as well as works of his artist friends Giovanni Segantini, Ferdinand Hodler, and Cuno Amiet. Their individual artistic approaches all hallmark Swiss art in its brilliant leap into the 20th century.
The collection additionally comprises important sculptures, paintings, and drawings by Alberto Giacometti, who left a lasting impact on modernist art. Diego Giacometti’s highly artistic furniture creations round off the Giacometti Collection at the Villa Planta. Diego was long Alberto’s “right hand”, and it was only late in life that he no longer lived in the shadow of his famous brother and came into his own as an artist.
Augusto Giacometti’s astonishingly early abstractions played a fundamental role in breathing new life into 20th-century Swiss painting. These works make up the prelude of the second part of the presentation of our collection in the extension building.
