Fragments. On Searching, Finding, and Showing the Incomplete
06.09.2025 – 04.01.2026

Shards, snippets, snaps, and shots – in our daily lives we encounter fragments in many forms and contexts. Since its beginnings art has been preoccupied with fragments and with the question: When is a work of art complete? With a view to its own collection the exhibition allows for a variety of different artistic strategies that deal with fragments – that reveal them and rearrange them or deliberately create empty spaces.
Found fragments such as natural elements or ruins here come upon constructed ones: shattered sheets of glass, deconstructed church windows and body parts. At times, the fragment stands for a larger context or consists of empty spaces, the completion of which only becomes possible when seen by the viewer.
As places of historical inquiry museums always follow a trail from the past to the present that is often conveyed by fragments. Together with collecting and exhibiting there is also the power of dis-order, of breaking open conformity and conventional ways of thinking. A process which is constantly changing and thus the ideal basis for engaging with the fragment.

The exhibition includes works by, among others Marion Baruch, Miriam Cahn, Markus Casanova, Silvie Defraoui, Martin Disler, Christoph Draeger, Corsin Fontana, Augusto Giacometti, Monica Ursina Jäger, Owsky Kobalt, Sara Masüger, Meret Oppenheim, Leta Peer, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Florio Puenter, Dieter Roth, Marcel Schaffner, Roman Signer, Gaudenz Signorell, Daniel Spoerri, Andrea Todisco, Ester Vonplon, Andreas Walser, Willy Weber und Walter Kurt Wiemken.
