Aim and object of provenance research is to study the history of artworks and to document ownership structure and change of hands in a preferably unbroken sequence. As a public cantonal institution the Art Museum Graubünden not only bears the responsibility but also has the moral obligation to know the provenance of the artworks in its own collection. With its provenance research the Art Museum Graubünden seeks to create transparency and to gain new scientific insights.
1st provenance research project 2019-2020
From 2019 to 2020, thanks in particular to the valuable support of the Federal Office of Culture FOC, the Art Museum Graubünden was able to conduct provenance research for the first time on a selection of 73 works from the collection and around 168 works from the Werner Coninx Collection, which was received on permanent loan in 2018. The results of the research are published online in the final report and in the collection catalogue. On 27 March 2021, the exhibition ‘Telemach's Odyssey. Of Princes and National Socialists’ on the topic of provenance research opened on 27 March 2021 (duration until 24 May 2021). The presentation incorporated some of the results of the last two years of provenance research at the Art Museum Graubünden.

2nd provenance research project 2021-2022
Thanks to the continued support of the Federal Office of Culture (FOC), the Art Museum Graubünden was able to continue researching the provenance of 183 additional works that entered its collection (purchase, donation or deposit) and the Werner Coninx Collection between 1933 and 1945 in 2021 and 2022. The aim of this second research project was to clarify as fully as possible the provenance of these works, which were carefully selected because of their historical significance and their importance for the Art Museum Graubünden, the Canton of Graubünden and Switzerland. The results of the research are summarised in the final report. The provenances of the corresponding works are also published in the online collection catalogue.

3rd provenance research project 2023-2024
The Art Museum Graubünden received financial support from the Federal Office of Culture (BAK) for a further two years. The focus of this provenance research was a donation of 17 works by Angelika Kauffmann, which entered the museum's collection in 2022. The results of this project are published in the final report. The provenances of the corresponding works are also published in the online collection catalogue.
