Remo Albert Alig works relentlessly on an extensive oeuvre dedicated to symbols. The artist links threads of ancient knowledge, techniques given for lost, and overlooked insights on art works. In their concentrated polyphony they show a symbolic effect. Alig has received this year's Somedia art prize, which comes with a publication. This is being presented as part of an exhbition at the Stadtgalerie Chur.
How do people decipher the world? How do they gather experience and knowledge? How do they store all this? In what way can they talk about it? Remo Albert Alig confronts these philosophical questions. In his work he condenses whole sets of mutually dependent, overlapping, contradictive, as well as stimulating images and narratives. In their complete irrationality these evoke small universes in the viewer. With a cultural and biographical background of his own the viewer steps into a hall of mirrors where his knowledge is developed further by reproducing itself in a self-reflective way. Thus the works of art turn into individual experience and evoke surprising gains in knowledge. Remo Albert Alig has specifically created new works for the exhibition at the Stadtgalerie Chur.
The exhibition is part of the Somedia art award. Ever since 2006 the Somedia has supported current art from the region with the campaign "Kunst in der Südostschweiz" and since 2012 has conferred an art award. The related book series is published in cooperation with the Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur. Even though the art museum, due to the extension, remains closed until June 2016, the continuity of this valuable means of encouragement is preserved. In addition to the prize and the publication the Bündner Kunstmuseum organises an exhibition for the artist in the form of a "Gastspiel".
